Students spend a large portion of their academic careers learning about academic writing, but one common problem is that students write words without actually conveying ideas that matter to them. It’s easy to dismiss creative writing as “difficult” or “unnecessary” for language learners, but at its core, creative writing is the art of communication. In this interactive workshop, participants will learn how to incorporate creative nonfiction writing—students writing about their lives—into the English language curriculum. Participants will learn strategies to help students generate ideas for writing, use literary elements, and provide feedback to peers. Using creative writing in the classroom will allow students not only to appreciate the literature they read but also to use English in creative and meaningful ways.
【信息链接】 Nora Liu Robinson is currently a U.S. Department of State English Language Fellow at Capital Normal University in Beijing, China. She earned her MA TESOL from Michigan State University and taught English for six years at the Interlochen Arts Academy, a secondary school for the arts. Her interests include writing instruction, motivation, and curriculum design. She is a member of a teachers’ online writing group.
